  • The USAMTS commences; Round 1 is released.

May

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Exams are held during the first two weeks of May around the United States. These examinations allow high school students to receive college credit or placement for work done in high school in a variety of subjects including Calculus and Statistics. Students doing well on the exams may be eligible for the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement.
  • National MATHCOUNTS was held May 9 in Denver, Colorado. 6th grader Darryl Wu from Washington state became the youngest national champion ever, and Texas brought home the team title. More results are listed on the MATHCOUNTS website.
  • The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair was held in Atlanta, Georgia from May 11-16. Students from around the world who had advanced from local science fairs associated with ISEF competed for nearly 4 million dollars in prizes. View more information on the ISEF website.
  • The 33rd Annual ARML competition was held on May 30 and May 31. For 2008, a fourth competition site was added at the University of Georgia, in addition to the existing sites at Penn State, UNLV, and the University of Iowa. Results can be viewed on the official ARML website.

  • The AIME II is held.
  • The 2008 USAMO is held for the top 505 scorers on the AMC-AIME competitions.

  • 2008 HMMT sign ups closed.
  • USAMTS round 3 was held.
  • Clever proof of Heron's Formula discovered by AoPS community member Miles Edwards, and published in American Mathematical Monthly.
  • 2007 William Lowell Putnam competition was held at universities across North America. The results are here. The problems are here.

  • The Princeton University Mathematics Competition (PUMaC) occurred, and was won by Team Carolina, which included AoPS members jb05, MysticTerminator, Iversonfan2007, and mysmartmouth.

  • The AHSIMC iTest occurred, and was won by Team Quagga, consisting entirely of AoPS members.

  • The PoincarĂ© conjecture was solved by Russian mathematician Grigory Perelman, who then declined the Fields Medal.

July 2006

  • The International Mathematical Olympiad took place in Slovenia. Of the six members of the U.S. team, 2 were awarded gold medals, and 4 were awarded silver medals. While team results are unofficial, the Chinese team had the highest scoring students, with the U.S. team finishing fifth. 2006 IMO Homepage
