What is WOOT?

WOOT stands for Worldwide Online Olympiad Training. WOOT is a 7-month Olympiad preparation and testing program that brings together many of the best students from around the world to learn Olympiad problem solving skills.

Why participate in WOOT?

Most students have little or no Olympiad-level experience or instruction before they take a National Olympiad. WOOT remedies this problem by offering test-taking and solution-writing practice with feedback, classes with past Olympiad winners, and collaboration with the some of the top high school math students in the world.

Who is WOOT right for?

WOOT is ideal for students preparing for a National Olympiad such as the USA Mathematical Olympiad. Due to sponsorship from D. E. Shaw group, Jane Street Capital, and Two Sigma Investments, LLC, 2009 Math Olympiad Summer Program participants are invited to join WOOT for free. Due to sponsorship from Science House, six top students from Central and South America will be invited to participate in WOOT. Thus, all participants in WOOT will have the opportunity to train with the top high school students in the United States and around the world. Students who are not capable of consistently scoring 5 or higher on the American Invitational Mathematics Exam should strongly consider waiting until they have more experience before joining WOOT.

What does WOOT offer?

The WOOT program includes the following:

  • 16 problem solving classes devoted to pre-Olympiad and Olympiad problem solving. Classes will be offered at a variety of levels, from those designed to help students qualify for their National Olympiads to those designed to help students tackle challenging Olympiad problems.
  • 8 problem solving articles and sets of practice problems. Each of these will prepare students for two of the classes.
  • 3 practice AIME-style tests, consisting of AIME-like pre-Olympiad problems.
  • 6 practice Olympiad tests, each structured like one day of the USAMO or IMO.
  • Detailed feedback on student work on each of the Olympiad tests and the problem sets.
  • WOOT message board for discussing lectures, solving lecture problem lists, and sharing post-test thoughts.
  • 24-hour online classroom access for WOOT participants to collaborate.
  • Numerous International Math Olympiad participants and USA Mathematical Olympiad winners will be WOOT instructors.

WOOT Testimonials

  • "I definitely got a lot out of WOOT; I doubt I would have scored 9 on the AIME or gotten very much on the USAMO without WOOT."
  • "The classes went over a wide variety of problems, both in difficulty and in subject matter, so that there was always a challenge involved, but also material that gradually introduced you to new topics. In this way the material was both accessible and interesting. The handouts not only got the classes going at a fast pace, but also served as excellent study material in reviewing for the USAMO."
  • "I liked the feedback I got from the instructors. I was able to feel more comfortable with proof writing."
  • "It is because of WOOT that I have delved into the realm of olympiad mathematics. Earlier, I never really appreciated proofs and their ideas. Now, I definitely do."
  • "I enjoyed the classroom, the discussions, and the problems on the handouts. They were very creatively conceived, and I think WOOT instructors paid excellent attention to the discussion during online classes."
  • "The entire course is well designed. The classes are engaging, the handouts are very detailed and easy to follow, and the assignments are suitable for students at different levels."
  • "I like the AIME and USAMO strategy sessions, and especially the AIME one, because it gave me invaluable techniques I would never have used without it."
